helg med familjen / weekend with family

My parents had their car loaded with vegetables, furniture, and my little brother when they visited the cottage over the weekend. I had made a slow cooked beef stew with Spanish chorizo, garlic, carrots and dried chanterelles. The stew was left to simmer in the oven with onions, bay leaves and chilli in 150 degrees Celsius for 5 hours and then topped with a dash of cream which rounded off the spicy flavours in a nice way. The stew was served with roasted root vegetables and on the side was a plate with parsley and red onions, tomatoes and pickles. My little brother fell asleep satisfied by the fire with Elsa at his feet, we woke him up when it was time for fika. To the coffee I served a blueberry cheesecake with gingerbread crust. After that it was time for everyone to take a place by the fire, and close their eyes a little.

himmelska hundar / heavenly dogs

Autumn is almost here, the mornings are getting chilly and are often covered in mist. To celebrate and indulge in this lovely crisp season, I brought hubby and Elsa to Himmelska Hundar (Heavenly Dogs) for a real afternoon tea with clotted cream and scones, they also offered good gluten- and lactosefree alternatives for me. Of course there is a special menu for Elsa and her furry friends. We never wanted to leave the café, it was such a lovely atmosphere with happy dogs and people. Heavenly Dogs is located next to the Tessin park, where children and pets gather to play and enjoy the lush greenery. The Farmers' Market opens up here on the weekends, so we bought some organic ingredients for dinner that night. pumpa / pumpkin

The pumpkin patch is growing by the minute, the big beautiful leaves are climbing up the trees, across the lawn, down to the creek. It's always exciting to count the number of pumpkins and see if we  are growing the family of Butternut Squash and Kabocha, a pumpkin often used in Thailand. I prefer to cook Kabocha when it is around a couple of kilos, while Butternut which is a winter pumpkin should be harvested when the shell has turned yellow.  The Thai pumpkin can also be harvest later, but I can't really wait that long!

From the garden I pick pumpkin, thai basil, carrots in different colours, green chillies, leeks, wax beans and kale. I wok the veggies with garlic, lots of white pepper and oyster sauce. A perfect lunch to be enjoyed on the porch while Elsa is nibbling on sweet peas.

dinner in the dark

A few weeks ago hubby and I celebrated our anniversary! We decided long ago that we should share the responsibility between us every other year for how to celebrate the anniversary day. This is a lovely tradition, so this year it was hubby's turn to take care of the details and I was the one trying to figure out what kind of evening he had planned for us. We met for drinks at Ljungren's terrace, a very casual but hip roof top bar at Sodermalm. After the drinks we took a stroll down town, to the lazy streets of Sofo, the cozy quarters with all the boutiques and antiques. And suddenly we stopped outside this very small and simple entrance that did not reveal much. Svartklubben (Dark restaurant) was the place for the anniversary dinner, a three course in total darkness served by the blind owner and his staff. They entertained us with music and songs, we were seated next to another couple who we spent 4 hours singing and chatting with - and with no clue about how they or the other guests or interior even looked like.  It was an amazing and enlightening experience that added a new dimension to my senses.  That strange feeling of pouring up the wine in the dark, tasting it, allowing myself to relax and just listen to the voices around me, eat the food without seeing the plate, without knowing the colours, the origin or anything about the menu! I recommend you all to give it a try! Things we sometimes take for granted is not always the reality for others.
